My name is Dr. V. Actually, it’s Jessica, followed by a long last name that no one can ever pronounce correctly, so I think it’s best that we just do what everyone at my work does and call me Dr. V. You can call me Jessica if you insist, but don’t expect me to answer any questions about your dog if you do. READ MORE >>

Dueling dognose

Wednesday, March 10, 2010

Husband took out the camera this weekend to submit Kekoa to a family tradition, the fish-eye lens close up.

She turned on her “soulful” eyes and readily complied.

Brody does not like the competition, if his startled expression is any indication.

He continues to be a bit nonplussed at the new addition, but he’s getting better.

I mean really, who could resist this face?

Fleas and novel control ideas not to try

Tuesday, March 9, 2010

Fleas stink. No doubt about it. They make your pet miserable, you miserable, they carry parasites, and they’re gross. Worse still, once they take up residence in your home, they can be very difficult to get rid of.

Why is that?

Product Review: World’s Best Cat Litter

Monday, March 8, 2010

I have to admit, I don’t spend a great deal of time thinking about cat litter. Some of this is by design- when I was pregnant in 2004, I told my husband he had to change the cat litter because otherwise MY ENTIRE PREGNANCY WAS AT RISK (which, by the way, is not entirely true- one needs to take precautions, true, but changing litter during pregnancy isn’t an automatic Toxoplasmosis infection.)

Anyway, I left out that last part because I was happy to have an excuse to hand over litter duties, and I just never took them back. So here we are, that baby is now five, and my husband still does most of the litter changing. He has in this time become a bit of a litter connoisseur, dictating with precision which qualities makes a good or a poor choice with the snobbiness of a Beluga caviar taster.

Smell, dust, scatter, all of these things factor into his poorly described algorithm, and I simply just buy a new container of litter every week and hope I picked the right one. “What eeez theeees?” said with a sneer meets a bad choice, one a little too dusty. “I hate zee marbles!” he declares when I tried a container of crystals. I’m still a little unclear on which one he actually liked, but that’s OK.

I tried some of the more environmentally-friendly litters a while back, paper ones and pine ones, and found them soggy and a bit smelly, so I’ve been sticking to clumping litter ever since. Then the people over at  World’s Best Cat Litter sent me a sample bag to try out. Our resident litter expert (aside from Apollo) was dubious, but agreed to give it a shot.

Mea culpa

Saturday, March 6, 2010

You know I don’t write on the weekends very often, but given my post on Friday I wanted to make sure to come back and give credit where credit is due. We just got back from Circus Vargas with 2 tired and happy kids. I can’t believe how much the show has changed from what I remember!

It was more like Cirque du Soleil than the old school three-ring circus, with aerialists, trapeze artists, and unique acts from different corners of the world. Plus popcorn. I didn’t miss the animals (obviously) and from listening around, no one else in the audience did either.

I am so heartened that a traveling show can change with the times and continue to succeed, and so glad I could share the fun and excitement of the big top with my family in a way we all felt good about. I wish Circus Vargas- and others who have done the same- many years of success! We’ll see you next time around!

Picture of the Week

Saturday, March 6, 2010

A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, a puppy slumbered very cutely.

He dreams of being a shar-pei.

All the World’s a Circus

Friday, March 5, 2010

“To me, clowns aren’t funny. In fact, they’re kind of scary. I’ve wondered where this started and I think it goes back to the time I went to the circus and a clown killed my dad.”   -Jack Handy

In my post about the Sea World tragedy last week, I mentioned how my friends have pretty much stopped inviting me on any Sea World trips. At least when I decline, I’m nice about it.

However, I neglected to mention the e-mail response I sent to the well meaning woman in my mom’s group who suggested we all take a group trip to the Ringling Brothers circus last year. I can’t say I was too diplomatic at all about that response, in which I helpfully included some links to all the abuses suffered by the exotic animals in their care. I went all “Water for Elephants” on her, truth be told.

Her response was a horrified, “I had no idea!” which was hopefully sincere and not just an attempt to tame the crazy lady. I think she meant it. Either way, the topic never came up again.
